punched and kicked

AOL News: Nadin Khoury, 13, says he was on his way home from school when seven older teenagers jumped him and began punching and kicking him outside an apartment complex. One of his alleged attackers filmed the assault, which went on for more than 20 minutes before a woman driving by the scene leapt out of her car and chased the bullies off. "There's nothing you can do," Khoury told Fox 29 in Philadelphia. "You can't fight back or it comes down even worse. You can't say anything except call for help." Khoury said the group of teens has targeted others as well. "They do it for no reason," he said. "Anybody that's smaller than them, just to get their kicks."  Khoury was not seriously injured in the beating, but he has been unable to go to school because of the threats he and his family have received since the Jan. 11 attack. He said the teens, who range in age from 15 to 17, had bothered him before and said his family will likely have to move to a different town. He also told Fox 29 that he believed he had been targeted because his family is from Liberia. On the video -- which the teens later posted to YouTube -- Khoury's attackers can be heard laughing at him as tries to get away. And one young woman, apparently a fellow student, is seen on the tape ignoring Khoury's cries for help and simply walking away. - Mara Gay, Feb 2011 ('Bullying' Teens Busted After Beating 13-Year-Old [VIDEO]).

openly kev

USA TODAY: Kevin, the first openly gay character in Archie's 70-year history, has made a splash in the non-comics world, too. His debut and his creator, writer/artist Dan Parent, were nominated for a GLAAD Media Award last month. "When you're at different shows and conventions, and people come right up to you and talk to you about it," Parent says, "that's when it really hits you how much the character has affected people. It's all fantastic. I'm surprised how positive it's been," he adds. "We knew going into it we were doing the right thing. You're always prepared in the back of your mind for some backlash. Not to say there hasn't been some. Not everybody's particularly happy about it, but from where I'm sitting it's been about 98% positive." - Brian Truitt, Feb 2011 (Kevin Keller proves a diverse and popular asset for Archie Comics).

CBC: According to Archie Comic Publications," Kevin Keller is the new hunk in town and Veronica just has to have him... Mayhem and hilarity ensue as Kevin desperately attempts to let Veronica down easy and her flirtations only become increasingly persistent." "The introduction of Kevin is just about keeping the world of Archie Comics current and inclusive," Archie Comics co-CEO Jon Goldwater said in an online posting Thursday. "Archie's hometown of Riverdale has always been a safe world for everyone. It just makes sense to have an openly gay character in Archie comic books." The Keller character is part of an overall commitment to stay relevant with today's teens, the publisher said - Apr 2010 (Archie comic to introduce gay character).

Fearless Melange

AfterEllen: Mélange Lavonne uses her mic to talk about important issues, especially within the LGBT community. In the video for "Gay Bash," the out MC calls out those who hated her friend Kevin enough to kill him, when they didn't even know him (Mélange Lavonne "Gay Bash").

AfterEllen: Lavonne, who is working on a new album, brings all of herself — including her sexual orientation — to her music despite the fact that hip-hop is often experienced as misogynistic and homophobic. HomoRevolution, according to the tour's MySpace page, "is not just a revolution against those who oppress us sexually but also musically. Today's LGBT Community should know we exist." "I'm trying to get a message across, trying to spread awareness … about what I've endured and what my friends have gone through," said Lavonne, who has been the victim of anti-gay discrimination herself, specifically through the loss of a collegiate athletic scholarship. "I had a basketball scholarship at Dillard University in New Orleans," she explained. "The 60-year-old female coach had suspicions that some of the players were playing around with each other, and she told us that she couldn't have dykes on the team, that it would not be tolerated. She pulled me aside specifically and said that I could either get psychiatric help or lose my scholarship" (HomoHop's Melange Lavonne).

Mélange Lavonne (born c.1978) is an openly gay hip hop artist whose music addresses political themes including homophobia, racism, exploitation, and discrimination within hip hop culture. Lavonne's 2008 song "Gay Bash" featured on Logo TV's Click List, a showcase for LBGT short films. "Gay Bash" tells the story of Kevin, a fictional gay man murdered by gay bashers. It was directed by Little Red Pictures, with Lavonne as executive producer. As well as performing well on the Click List, the song was in January 2009 listed on AfterEllen.com's sampler of "songs from the new breed of out artists who are blazing a trail for a whole new generation, who aren’t afraid to be overtly political or sexual". It was also played at the London Lesbian and Gay Film Festival as a short before the Queen Latifah movie Life Support (Wikipedia).

If UR not READY, UR just not READY

Monsters and Critics: Ricky Martin has become the latest star to speak out about the bullying of gay teenagers. The pop star, who only came out as gay earlier this year, told Ellen DeGeneres that teenagers had to be allowed to come out in their own time. 'I think that everyone has to go through their own process,' Martin, 38, told DeGeneres. 'When you're not ready, you're not ready. You have to go through a spiritual path. 'It doesn't matter if takes you 10, 15 years, since the moment you realise where you understand who you are. You cannot be forced. 'Children are being bullied because they are gay and they are committing suicide. Children are committing suicide because they are being outed. If you're not ready, you're just not ready' (Ricky Martin speaks out against bullying of gay teens).

Enrique "Ricky" Martín Morales (born December 24, 1971) is a Puerto Rican pop singer and actor who achieved prominence, first as a member of the Latin boy band Menudo, then as a solo artist since 1991. During his career he has sold more than 60 million albums worldwide. He is the founder of Ricky Martin Foundation (in Spanish Fundación Ricky Martin), a non-profit charity organization (Wikipedia).

gum in my hat

JustJared: “I’ve always been a huge advocate against bullying because I myself was actually a target all through elementary school I was tormented every day. Not physically but verbally and actually when I was in the 6th grade, we still don’t know who to this day because it was anonymous, but people kept putting gum in my hat – chewed gum. So when I put it on it would get stuck in my hair and they would put it in my boot and I would have to buy new boots because it would get stuck to my sock. I had to go to school everyday living in suspicion of everyone in my class and I was very very very lucky to have a great support system.” Her advice to others getting bullied: “I learned that you have to know who you are even if you’re unsure of it. You can’t doubt yourself you just have to have confidence and I know that’s easier said then done trust me I know that but you just have to keep your head held high even if you don’t believe it because soon enough you will. I would just say you have to treat it like water off a ducks back and know that all they’re looking for is a reaction and if you don’t give it to them then it will stop.” Nikki Yanofsky Speaks Out About Bullies

Nicole "Nikki" Yanofsky (born February 8, 1994) is a Canadian jazz-pop singer from Hampstead, Quebec. She is involved in charitable causes and has released her first studio album on her own label, A440 Entertainment, and on Decca Records outside of Canada. Yanofsky sang Canada's national anthem at the opening ceremonies of the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver. She also performed during the closing ceremonies and the Paralympic opening ceremony (Wikipedia).

words can hurt

Examiner: "Many people think of bullying as getting beat up in school, but it is so much more than that. For me it was all of the verbal harassment I had to deal with. People say sticks and stones may break your bones but names can never hurt you, but that's not true. Words can hurt. They hurt me. Things were said to me that I still haven’t forgotten." "I was lucky, though. I had really supportive parents, other education options, and I had outlets like music and acting. I actually used all of the bullying as a motivation to succeed. I think I have actually become a stronger person because of it." "But I know that many kids and teens do not have all of the support and outlets I have, and that's why I want to do something about bullying. I want to make it stop. And I’ve teamed up with PACER and TeensAgainstBullying.org as their spokesperson to create a movement. A bullying prevention movement made up of kids and parents and teachers everywhere who want it to stop, too" - Shelley Dillon, Examiner, Nov 21, 2009 (Disney's Demi Lovato stands up against bullying in new PSA).

Demetria Devonne "Demi" Lovato (born August 20, 1992) is an American actress and singer-songwriter. Her earliest roles included a part on Barney & Friends, before she became better known for her roles as Mitchie Torres in the Camp Rock movies, as Sonny Munroe in Sonny with a Chance and as the star of the 2009 movie Princess Protection Program. universally unacceptable

24dash: An international star and champion of gay rights has backed Sunderland's approach to tackling bullying on a visit to schools in the city. Sir Ian McKellen met pupils at Sandhill View and Hetton secondary schools to describe his own experiences of growing up gay and facing homophobic bullying, and to answer questions about how he coped and some of the help and advice now available to teenagers. On his visit he was accompanied by representatives of the national charity and campaign group 'Stonewall' which he helped found to represent the views and interests of lesbians, gay men and bisexuals. After speaking Sir Ian answered general and personal questions from students about homophobia and his work as an actor. "Until I visited secondary schools I hadn’t realised how much anti-gay bullying goes on throughout the education system in this country. By talking frankly about my own life as a gay man and listening to the concerns of staff and students I hope the visits arranged by Stonewall with Sunderland City Council, may make a difference in the classroom and the playground and also give confidence to gay students about their lives in the future." (Ross Macmillan, 24dash.com, Jan 28, 2011). Sir Ian McKellen backs council's anti-bullying approach

Sir Ian Murray McKellen CH, CBE (born 25 May 1939) is an English actor. He has received a Tony Award and two Academy Award nominations. His work has spanned genres from Shakespearean and modern theatre to popular fantasy and science fiction. He became a founding member of Stonewall, one of the United Kingdom's most influential LGBT rights groups, of which he remains a prominent spokesman. He was made a Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) in 1979, and knighted in the 1991 New Year Honours for his outstanding work and contributions to theatre. see me now!

Softpedia: British actor Andrew Garfield has a very tough mission ahead of him, that of taking over from Tobey Maguire in the new “Spider-Man” film. In the meantime, though, he’d like to use the opportunity to draw attention to a matter very close to his heart: bullying. In a recent interview with the Daily Mail on the set of the upcoming “Spider-Man” film, Garfield says that he’s no stranger to the experience of being bullied: regardless of what people say, school is “tough” and some of the harshest things happen on its grounds. He too was bullied and, though he’s reluctant to say it, he’s probably happy he got the chance to play the role most young actors dream of to tell the bullies in his past “see me now!” Still, he doesn’t blame those who do the bullying for their behavior, because he believes it’s a learned pattern. The bully was a victim himself once, Andrew says in the interview. “Of course, every school has their bullies, and when you’re a kid you wish you had the power to fight them and protect other people – and yourself,” the actor tells the Mail. “No, school’s hard. I think everyone has been bullied at some point. Kids can be incredibly cruel. On certain days you would come home and think, ‘today was really horrible,’ so I guess I have been bullied and I think everyone has been bullied at some point by some figure in their life. I don’t think anyone can escape it,” he adds. But he’s not blaming the bullies for it, but rather the adults who don’t intervene to break the cycle. Not that he’s offering a solution for the problem, either, since he’s not the one to do that, no matter how much he wishes he was. “What bullies don’t realize is the effect he / she can have on someone throughout the rest of their life. It can form patterns in another kid and there’s the trauma... It’s really unfair,” Andrew, who was a victim of bullying himself, says" - Elena Gorgan, Softpedia (Andrew Garfield Speaks Against Bullying: It’s a Learned Pattern).

Andrew Russell Garfield (born August 20, 1983) is an American-British actor who has appeared in radio, theatre, film, and television. He is known for his roles in the 2007 films Lions for Lambs and Boy A, 2009's The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus, and the 2010 drama The Social Network. He has been cast as Peter Parker/Spider-Man in the franchise's 2012 reboot. Garfield is a dual citizen of the US and the UK (Wikipedia),

Breaking Bad

Orlandosentinel: A "Breaking Bad" actor who has cerebral palsy says he understands the outrage a Sanford father felt in lashing out about school bullying. RJ Mitte, who plays the son of Bryan Cranston, today issued a statement saying he is familiar with such bullying. James Willie Jones of Sanford boarded a school bus to confront students he said had ridiculed his daughter, who has cerebral palsy. In his statement, Mitte said: "It's unfortunate that he didn't have better recourse than to act out as he did. Mr. Jones has come forward and taken responsibility for his actions. But what about everyone else in this situation who is culpable apologizing for their lack of action?" Mitte, who recently turned 18, is spokesman for I AM PWD (Inclusion in the Arts and Media of Performers With Disabilities). Jones, who was charged with disorderly conduct and disturbing a school function, appeared on ABC's "Good Morning America" this week to speak out against bullying. He also urged parents not to follow his example in lashing out.Mitte said safeguards in the system are needed to curb bullying. "I'm told that one in three teens says that they have been bullied at school," Mitte said. "I know from personal experience that the bullying of a disabled person can still be seen by some as acceptable or is given a silent pass. But that kind of thinking is wrong. We all need to do a better job at speaking up and saying so when we are witness to this kind of abuse. It's encouraging that this incident has sparked a nationwide discussion" - Hal Boedeker, Orlando Sentinel television critic ('Breaking Bad' actor: People need to speak out against bullying).

Roy Frank “RJ” Mitte III (born August 21, 1992) is an American actor best known for his role as Walter White Jr. on the AMC television series, Breaking Bad. Mitte moved to Hollywood in 2006, and began training with personal talent manager Addison Witt. Mitte has mild cerebral palsy. His manager states that it was Mitte's diligence and attitude that has helped him overcome challenges in all areas of his life (Wikipedia).

Trevor’s Daniel

Multivu.prnewswire: Daniel Radcliffe has been involved with The Trevor Project since August 2009, when he joined the Circle of Hope, a community of major donors which plays an essential role in the financial leadership that makes the organization’s lifesaving work possible, with a significant donation. “I believe that The Trevor Project has a universal mission of acceptance that is so profound,” said Radcliffe. “If this brief PSA makes even one lost and alone young person aware of The Trevor Helpline and the lifesaving support it offers, then it will have been an endeavor well worth making.” To learn more about The Trevor Project’s programs and its work toward saving lives, building communities and changing society, visit TheTrevorProject.org." Our Vinny

Wetpaint.com: Have we mentioned that we love Vinny? Between his burgeoning sassy side, his inner romantic being revealed, and, now, him joining the fight against bullying, Vin’s quickly becoming our MVP. MTV has joined the Love is Louder initiative, similar to Perez Hilton’s It Gets Better campaign, DoSomething.org, and The Trevor Project. MTV’s initiative features stars in their own homemade videos speaking directly to teens facing the torments of bullying who may feel they have nowhere else to turn. In the wake of a string of recent teen suicides, all resulting from anti-gay bullying, Vinny felt compelled to remind young people that there is hope. "I want you to know that I know how it feels to be bullied and disrespected. But I also want you to know that there's always, always love and support all around you," says Vinny in the video he posted. "So make sure you give love [and] receive love [because] love is a lot louder than abuse." Well said, Vinny. Vinny Speaks Out Against Bullying

Examiner.com: Though we have heard from a number of different celebrities at one point or another in the battle to stop teen bullying across America, Vinny Guadagnino from "Jersey Shore" has been one of the more outspoken people from the world of TV. He previously made a video simply encouraging those suffering to hang in there, and now he has created a new message in conjunction with MTV and Facebook. Here is what Vinny has to say in full: "If you've ever seen our show, you know that things can get a little wild at the Shore. But no matter how out of hand things get you'll never see us making fun of somebody for who they are or who they choose to love, especially if they're lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender. "No-one should ever be made fun of, especially for being brave enough to be who they are. If there is one thing in the world that I hate on, it's a bully." Joe's Message

OMGmusic: "Joe Jonas is lending his support for a campaign against bullying in high schools. The 21-year-old Camp Rock 2 actor and singer has filmed a public service announcement (PSA) for the Cambio Cares organization. In the clip, Joe urges youngsters not to accept bullying if they are a victim. "The fact that people result to bullying is horrible," says the singer. "If there's anyway for us to stop it, you've got to start somewhere. It starts in yourself, it starts in your school, it starts in your community. Reach out to those people who are sitting in the cafeteria by themselves or they don't have many friends." Joe continues to say: "You should sit with them, talk to them, get to know them because they're just like you. Everybody has insecurities, everybody has fears. In this world it’s so easy to hate it, but you should always remember you were chosen to be on this earth, that it’s something special for you..." (Joe Jonas Supports Anti-Bullying Campaign)

Joseph Adam "Joe" Jonas (born August 15, 1989) is an American singer, musician, actor and dancer. He shares the lead singer role with his younger brother Nick of the Jonas Brothers, a pop-rock band made up of him and his two brothers, Nick and Kevin. Not Cool

Starpulse: Justin Bieber has issued a new public service announcement (PSA) in a bid to prevent bullying, insisting "there's nothing cool" about teasing helpless victims. The Baby hitmaker has previously opened up about his experiences at the hand of bullies, telling TV host Ellen Degeneres earlier this month, "Everybody goes through bullying. Everybody has, even me. On my YouTube page there are so many haters." Now Bieber has stepped up his campaign to help youngsters by recording a plea for the It Gets Better project, following a recent spate of suicides in America. He says in the clip, "Hey guys, I'm Justin Bieber. I just wanted to say there's nothing cool about being a bully and if you're getting bullied make sure to tell someone and, you know, it gets better. " And if you're a bystander make sure to step in and, you know, help out." Justin Bieber's Anti-Bullying PSA (Video)

Hollyscoop: Justin Bieber addressed the bullying problem in our country on today’s episode of Ellen, admitting that even he has had to deal with it. “Everybody goes through bullying,” he told Ellen. “Everybody has, even me. On my YouTube page, there are so many haters. They just say crazy stuff. I’m not mad, I’m 16 and I don’t have chest hair. I’m not angry about it at the moment. That will come. “People are like, ‘Look at him, he puts helium in his voice before he sings.’ You just have to laugh at yourself. It’s funny.” So how should kids stand up against bullies? “Especially if you’re a bystander, you should help out, because it could be you next.” Pretty well said, we must admit! Although, we’ve seen Justin’s entourage of dozens of bodyguards, and we’re sure they stop any bully in his tracks! Watch the video below…sounds like JB has a little crush on Selena Gomez! Justin Bieber Has a Message for Bullies!

news.cnet: Facebook announced Wednesday that it has partnered with teen idol Justin Bieber--yes, that Justin Bieber--and MTV's "The Thin Line" public awareness campaign to combat cyberbullying and other forms of digital abuse on the Web. Contributors to MTV's map of anti-abuse tactics from around the country will now be eligible to win prizes that include a "personalized voice-mail greeting from Justin Bieber." Facebook's anti-bullying poster boy: Justin Bieber

Justin Drew Bieber (born March 1, 1994) is a Canadian pop/R&B singer, songwriter and actor. Bieber was discovered in 2008 by Scooter Braun, who came across Bieber's videos on YouTube and later became his manager. Braun arranged for him to meet with Usher in Atlanta, Georgia, and Bieber was soon signed to Raymond Braun Media Group (RBMG), a joint venture between Braun and Usher, and then to a recording contract with Island Records offered by L.A. Reid. Bieber's debut single, "One Time", was released in 2009 and peaked in the top ten in Canada and charted in the top thirty in several international markets. His debut release, My World, followed on November 17, 2009, and was eventually certified platinum in the United States. He became the first artist to have seven songs from a debut album chart on the Billboard Hot 100. Bieber's first full studio release, My World 2.0, was released on March 23, 2010 and debuted at number one and within the top ten of several countries, and was certified platinum in the United States. It was preceded by the worldwide top-ten single, "Baby", in January 2010. The music video of "Baby" is currently ranked as the most viewed and most discussed YouTube video, and was the most disliked until being overtaken by Rebecca Black's song "Friday". Bieber followed-up the release of his debut album with his first headlining tour, the My World Tour, the remix albums My Worlds Acoustic and Never Say Never – The Remixes, and the 3D biopic-concert film Justin Bieber: Never Say Never – which had an opening weekend gross that nearly matched the record for the biggest opening weekend for a concert-film. Throughout his rise to fame, Bieber has been nominated and awarded numerous accolades, winning Artist of the Year at the 2010 American Music Awards, and being nominated for Best New Artist and Best Pop Vocal Album at the 53rd Grammy Awards. Bieber is considered a teen idol, and has been subject to acclaim from fans, as well as criticism and controversy from matters concerning his popularity and image (Wikipedia).

Perpectly Pink

Billboard: If P!nk's new music video for "F**kin' Perfect" doesn't make you cry or cringe at some point, you've got thicker skin than we do. The clip for the pop star's latest single, which has reached No. 30 on the Hot 100 so far, chronicles the painful struggle of a girl who is battling personal demons from a very young age. By the time she's a high school teen -- played to wrenching effect by "Napleon Dynamite" alum Tina Marjorino -- she's wearing brooding eyeliner and getting high in a bathroom stall, while her classmates blissfully try on prom dresses. Just before it's too late, though, it gets better. In a harrowing scene that shows the girl cutting herself in a bathtub (warning: it's grahic), a relic from that same disturbing childhood ultimately gives her a second lease at life. P!nk video's story directly just once, when she toasts to the girl's newfound happiness from across a crowded room...and it's enough to make you want to raise your glass right along with them (Monica Herrera, NY. Jan 2011). Pink's 'F**kin' Perfect' Video Gives Suicidal Teen a Second Chance

2dayfm: In a statement on her website, Pink challenges the audience to make themselves more aware of issues of mental illness. "Its a problem, and its something we should talk about. We can choose to ignore the problem, and therefore ignore this video, but that won't make it go away. I don't support or encourage suicide or cutting." Pink also hopes that the song's controversial nature will prove to be an invaluable lesson for her unborn baby. "I have a life inside of me, and I want her or him to know that I will accept him or her with open and loving and welcoming arms. And though I will prepare this little munchkin for a sometimes cruel world, I will also equip this kid to see all the beauty in it as well." Pink's F**kin' Perfect Video: F**kin' Controversial?

Alecia Beth Moore (born September 8, 1979), better known by her stage name, Pink (stylized as P!nk), is an American singer. She released her first single "There You Go", on her first album, the RandB-oriented Can't Take Me Home, in 2000 via LaFace Records, which garnered commercial success. Her more pop rock-oriented second studio album, Missundaztood, which began a marked shift in the sound of her music, was released in 2001 and was a huge success worldwide (Wikepedia). Wikipedia

Wikipedia: Charity Work - Pink is involved with many charities including "Phoenix vert," Human Rights Campaign, ONE Campaign, Prince's Trust, New York Restoration Project, Run for the Cure Foundation, Save the Children, Take Back the Night, UNICEF and World Society for the Protection of Animals. As of May 2008 Pink has been officially recognized as an advocate for the RSPCA in Australia. On February 16, 2009, Pink announced she was donating $250,000 to the Red Cross Bushfire Appeal to aid the victims of the bushfires that swept through the Australian state of Victoria earlier that month (a total of 173 people died in the fires, with around 500 injured, and 4000 homes lost). Pink stated that she wanted to make "a tangible expression of support" (Wikepedia). Wikipedia

Timesline.org: Degrassi will feature Adam, which will be portrayed by Jordan Todosey, a very female who feels that she is a boy. It will be a unique character since Jordan Todosey made some significant makeovers. Absolutely adopting a boy’s gait. She is a character who feel like she is a guy but born physically as a girl. Adam, a trans-gender character featured in the hit teen TV show, Degrassi season 10

Degrassination.com: Jordan will be playing a character, (Adam) who will most likely be transgender. In the promo we see her more content when in mens clothing rather than in female attire, so I just put it out there and asked if she can confirm “Adam” as being transgender and she wrote this: *Not confirming or denying that Adam is transgender*. She does add “I’m falling in love with the character, and truly enjoying portraying him.” So she will be playing a guy, we can confirm that with her last quote but has no bearing on the transgender issue. DN Exclusive Interview: Jordan “Adam” Todosey

Bullying is an abusive treatment, the use of force or coercion to affect others, particularly when habitual and involving an imbalance of power. It may involve verbal harassment, physical assault or coercion and may be directed persistently towards particular victims, perhaps on grounds of race, religion, gender, sexuality, or ability. The "imbalance of power" may be social power and/or physical power. The victim of bullying is sometimes referred to as a "targeted individual" (Wikipedia).
